Herbert Brandl. Koralm Killaz

Herbert Brandl found his way to the technique of monotype because, according to his own statements, he always had a problem with the large editions of prints and the monotype had the advantage of a one-time reprint from plate to paper. Monotype is a technique in which a glass plate is painted or marked and printed on paper while the colours are still wet. As a technique, it is ideal for the artist's painterly intentions, as it allows him to work in a similarly dynamic way to painting. "It is a pulsating process between the application and the wiping away of paint. In the process, light and space, horizons, mountains and knives, scenic structures emerge. The process-like application of paint in a flow is based on experiences in painting."
Meanwhile, Brandl works with a special oil paint on two acrylic plates that are not cleaned after the printing process, but draw the representation of the pre-print as a shadow into the next picture. Through this phantom print, each sheet is in a sense directly related to the previous one. But it is not only the shadows of the past that have to be taken into account, but also the reprint itself, in which the image is reproduced laterally reversed and the top layer of ink on the plate is the bottom layer on the paper. Each sheet is thus a complex composition of light and shadow, trace and memory, impression and imprint, and thus landscape and abstraction.
