“NULLA DIES SINE LINEA - KEIN TAG OHNE LINIE ”1 Paul Klee Paul Klee noted this sentence from the Historia Naturalis by the Roman scholar Pliny, in which he describes an episode between Apelles and Protogenes, in his 1938 catalog raisonné under a drawing with the work number 365. It could not describe Renate Krammer's artistic practice any better. For 20 years, the line has been the formal and thematic basis of her oeuvre, the basic idea and primum movens of an infinite number of compositional variations. The expression of a freehand movement on the sheet of paper according to parameters conceived by the artist in advance. Being able to abandon these parameters if other ideas prove more interesting during the work is part of Krammer's process-oriented approach. Klee developed his line theory between 1918 and 1927, to which he added only a few more aspects in the following years. He attributed expression, dynamism and psyche to the line. Leonardo, on the other hand, dealt with the subject of the line in equal depth, but understood it entirely in the sense of the “disegno” of the Renaissance: as plan, intention, design. For Leonardo, the line had the highly complex property of constructing bodies and objects, but he denied the existence of the line in nature and thus also its necessity in painterly representation.

According to Leonardo, we do not see nature in lines, but perceive landscapes in varying degrees of sharpness - from the details of the immediate surroundings to the more distant, which we only recognize out of focus. Things should therefore appear in tonal interlacing in the “smufato”. Father Zea expresses a similar skepticism towards the line in Daniel Kehlmann's novel Measuring the World when he tells the natural scientist Alexander von Humboldt about his attempt to determine the meridian length of the equator. "Measuring the equator. [...] To draw a line where there had never been one. Had they looked around out there? There are lines elsewhere." Kehlmann has Humboldt reply: "Lines exist everywhere [...]. They are an abstraction. Where there is space itself, there are lines "2 and thus describes the line as movement in space. However, Renate Krammer's line is not descriptive or representational, but the object and main protagonist of the work itself. Krammer explores the possibilities of the line and the material paper empirically and on the basis of the artistic process per se.
