For Alois Mosbacher, too, the "forest" is an ambivalent topos in the history of art and ideas. His painted (forest) landscapes have little in common with the traditional idyll of nature: the inhabitants of the forest have disappeared and the trees, compiled from various trunks and branches, create confusion. Mosbacher's painting is seemingly narrative; the pictorial narrative drives the viewer's associations in many directions, absurd, surreal, deeply sinister.
In oil, charcoal and pencil, Mosbacher also makes technique and material his subject, analysing the materiality of wood in expansive works and thus demonstrating the possibilities of current representational painting. Intensive media research in print media and the Internet accompanies Mosbacher's artistic work; photos from the political current suddenly break into Mosbacher's nature scenes, painted as fleetingly as traumas that have not yet been processed. The trees of a ghostly forest pale against the ugliness and cruelty of the present.
