Iris Andraschek

Iris Andraschek born 1963 in Horn, Lower Austria, completed her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, with complementary studies for fresco painting in Rome and Bolzano. Working residencies in Istanbul (2015), Woodside, CA (2012), New York (2010) Durham, Ontario (2002). Permanent installations in public space in Krems (together with Hubert Lobnig), Loosdorf, Lower Austria and in Vienna. Exhibitions in Austria and abroad, most recently at Büyük Valide Han and Austrian Cultural Forum, Istanbul, Landesgalerie Krems (2019) and Kunsthaus Wien (2018).

In her drawings, photographic and filmic portraits, sculptures, installations and temporary, political actions in public space, Iris Andraschek negotiates questions around the constructions and rituals in social systems of order, memory culture and the mutual dependence and exchange of categories of the private and the public, between lived everyday life and staging. She deals with personal, culturally shaped and political, socio-economic boundaries, as well as people's attempts to counteract the dualistic and rigid understanding of boundaries through the permanent reactualization of seemingly normative sets of rules and the development of alternative ways of living. She often portrays people who have freed themselves from conventional patterns of imagination and thought and refuse prescribed systems, anchoring their existence instead in a conscious life with nature. Beyond clichés and idylls, Andraschek deals with interpersonal processes and networks of relationships and the boundaries between reality and fiction in medially constructed images.
